Think about this:

A good way to solve this game is to progressively reduce the number of choices by dividing the pool of possible numbers in two. Why will this work? Ask yourself: How many times does 50 divide by 2?

  • 50 divided by 2 is 25 ...
  • 25 divided by 2 is about 13 ...
  • 13 divided by 2 is about 7 ...
  • 7 divided by 2 is about 4 ...
  • 4 divided by 2 is 2 ...
  • 2 divided by 2 is 1!

In just six tries, you have divided 50 all the way down to 1! You can use this same trick on this game, and divide the numbers left over after a guess by two. Computer scientists use this exactly this approach to looking for numbers to create the binary search tree alogorithms that power some of the largest data bases in the world!



How to Play the MathRomp Secret Number Hangman Game

This MathRomp Secret Number Hangman Game gives you a fun, interactive way to sharpen your logic and estimating skills, and also your subtraction and division skills! Can you beat the Hangman by guessing his Secret Number?

As the game starts, the Hangman will challenge you to guess his Secret Number, and he will tell you the number range in which the answer lies. To make a guess, you can input a number into the yellow answer bar by pressing the number pad buttons, or you can click on the yellow answer bar and enter numbers using your computer keyboard. If you want to change your guess before submitting it, press the CLEAR button. When you are happy with your guess, push the SUBMIT button and a feedback screen will check your answer. If you guessed incorrectly the Hangman will tell you whether the correct answer is larger or smaller than your guess.

By default, the game starts on EASY mode. You may choose your own difficulty level to play by clicking on either the EASY button or the HARD button. Clicking on either of these buttons will start a new game at the selected difficulty level.

This game is actually very simple, even trivial, once you get the "hang" of searching for a single unknown number in a known range of numbers! If you feel stuck, be sure to press the HELP button, for a quick tutorial on how to use an efficient binary search logic to solve this sort of problem.
